A Celebration of Art, Craft & Architecture

Saturday, September the 15th from 10:30 am - 3:30 pm.

Helen Day Art Center's sixth Annual Home Tour opens the doors to four distinctive Stowe area homes. This year we are featuring a well-known house designer's home tucked into the woods, a newly renovated home with drop dead views of Mt. Mansfield and two distinctive homes near Stowe Country Club.evMilford Cushman, principal of The Cushman Design Group lives with his wife, Terri Gregory, a renowned pottery artist, in their house named "Raven Beach". Milford built the original dwelling with his own hands in the mid 1980's. Originally a 900 square foot cottage tucked perfectly among the tall trees, the couple have added on throughout the different phases of their lives and subsequently their home has grown slowly to perhaps 1200 square feet. Sited discreetly into their own niches on the property are found a two story studio where Terri produces her beautiful ceramic pieces with a painting studio above for Milford, an outbuilding appropriately named the Bahama House, and a boat house for Terri's kayak and Milford's canoes. Land and land preservation is very important to this couple and the home and its outbuildings have been sighted around the natural landscape rather than visa versa.evTwo of this year's homes are newly built in the Stowe Club neighborhood of Stowe. This neighborhood is near Stowe Country Club and is privately situated yet only minutes from the conveniences of Stowe's Mountain Road. One house is a quiet oasis at the end of a road. The house draws you in from the minute you start down the driveway. The owner's lovely gardens and amazing rock walls surround this beautiful traditional styled house. The open layout and sweeping views are a perfect setting for entertaining and family gatherings. The second home in Stowe Club is sighted high above the first hole of Stowe Country Club. It is a gorgeous newly built Craftsman styled home with great attention to detail. The wide open great room features a Western fir ceiling and super Southerly views of the mountains and valleys of the Stowe area. The owners own Simple Home: a home technology company that specializes in home theater, whole house music and "smart home" installations (home automation, lighting control, security and various systems that can be controlled remotely - Think of turning up the heat in your vacation house on your drive up.) The heart of such systems are usually hidden but in this house we'll show you how it's done.evHigh above Stowe, in Stowe Hollow is this newly renovated home. The drive up to this house takes you on some of Stowe's quiet back roads. As you climb up the hills of Stowe Hollow you arrive at this inviting home with amazing views of Mt. Mansfield. The owner's extensive gardens, rock walls, and boulder walls lead you into an inviting courtyard. The owners of this home are avid art collectors. Their wonderful assortment of art include: paintings, pottery and cherished collectibles from their travels. Older paintings mingle with modern art and interesting glassware, add in some Art Deco touches and you have a wonderful eclectic mix.The Helen Day Art Center Home Tour runs from 10:30 AM to 3:30 PM, on Saturday September the 15th, 2007 and is self-guided. Included in the price is a light lunch, by Thompson's Flour Shop, served at the Helen Day Art Center. Lunch will also be available "To Go". Participants are welcome to view the current exhibit: Nature Remains: The Artist as Environmentalist.Home Tour tickets can be purchased at Helen Day Art Center or Stowe Area Association for $25 for HDAC members, $27 in advance and $30 the day of the event. Arising out of a Morristown community forum in 1999, and with offices located in Morrisville, River Arts has grown since its founding to collaborate with over 20 organizations and to serve over 4,000 people each year, not only in Morristown but throughout Lamoille County. The mission of River Arts is to enrich the community through the arts, building on the core belief that art is for everyone. In 2003 On the Rise, whose goal is youth empowerment through the arts, merged with River Arts. Together River Arts and On the Rise offer a wide range of arts experiences to elementary, middle school and high school students, and to adults of all ages. A visit to the River Arts website at www.riverartsvt.org gives one a good introduction to their many offerings, from video animation to painting and sculpture to tap dancing and from several different summer arts camps to poetry workshops for adults.River Arts purchased the Lamoille Grange in Morrisville in 2005 and is 2/3 of the way toward its goal of raising $783,000 for renovations and for seeding an endowment. With this award Helen Day recognizes and honors the achievement of all involved in forming River Arts, in its joining with On the Rise, and in their many contributions to the arts in our community. The steady growth of programming and vision of this multifaceted and multigenerational organization makes it also multi-amazing.- Lois Eby 2/13/07Past award recipients include:
